[SDFL] Narseal Batiste and six other suspected al Qaeda sympathizers were indicted on charges of plotting to attack targets, including the Sears Tower in Chicago and the FBI building in North Miami Beach, Florida. After two mistrials, jurors convicted Batiste and four other defendants. Two defendants were acquitted. A federal appeals court upheld the convictions of the five men. The appellate court sentenced Batiste to 13 years imprisonment, while the other 4 defendants received prison sentences of six to nine years.
Lyglenson Lemorin, one of the original 7 defendants who was acquitted in the first trial of all charges, was taken into custody by ICE for removal charges for having engaged in terrorist-related activities. He was physically deported to his native country of Haiti in January 2011.
