[SDFL] Jose Padilla,also known as Abdullah al-Muhajir or Muhajir Abdullah, is a United States citizen from Brooklyn, New York, who was convicted in federal court of aiding terrorists. Padilla was arrested in Chicago on May 8, 2002, on suspicion of plotting a radiological bomb attack. Padilla, Adham Hassoun, Mohamed Hesham Youssef and Kifah Jayyousi were charged with financial support and recruitment for Al Qaeda and other terrorist groups. In August 2007, a federal jury convicted Padilla, Jayyousi, and Hassoun with conspiracy to murder individuals overseas and providing material support to terrorists. In September 2011, a federal appeals court tossed out Padilla's 17-year prison sentence as too lenient. The ruling affirmed the convictions of Padilla, Adham Hassoun and Kifah Jayyousi on terrorism support and consipracy charges. The sentences of Hassoun and Jayyousi were also upheld. In September 2014 Padilla was handed a new prison sentence of 21 years.
