[NDIL] Sami Samir Hassoun was charged in a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Chicago with one count each of attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction and attempted use of an explosive device. Hassoun was arrested by Chicago FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) immediately after he placed a backpack which he thought contained an explosive device into a curbside trash receptacle near a crowded North Side street corner in the city. Hassoun has pleaded guilty to the charges. He was sentenced to 23 years in prison in connection with the attempted bombing.
