[SDNY] Maalik Alim Jones of Baltimore, Maryland, was indicted in the Southern District of New York for supporting and receiving military training from al Shabaab, a designated foreign terrorist organization based in Somalia that is allied with al-Qaida. In July 2011, Jones traveled to Somalia where he received military training at an al Shabaab training camp and learned to operate an AK-47 assualt rifle and rocket-propelled grenades. Jones also became a member of al Shabaab's specialized fighting force, Jaysh Aman, and participated in combat against soldiers of the Kenyan government on behalf of al Shabaab. In Sept. 2017, Jones pleaded guilty to conspiring to provide material support to al Shabaab, conspiring to receive military training from al Shabaab, and carrying and using an AK-47 machine gun, rocket-propelled grenades and other weapons in furtherance of his support for al Shabaab. He was sentenced to 35 years in prison, followed by five years of supervised release, for conspiring to provide material support to al shabaab.
